Usage Note
Apodo is the standard word for a nickname or alias in Spanish. It differs from hipocorístico (a diminutive pet form of a given name like Paco for Francisco) in that an apodo is often based on a physical trait, habit, or story. Poner un apodo means 'to give someone a nickname'.
Examples
"Su apodo en el equipo era 'el Rayo'."
Natural Translation
His nickname on the team was 'the Lightning'.
