Usage Note

Alfombra is the standard word for a floor carpet or rug throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The phrase alfombra roja (red carpet) is used for formal or celebrity events just as in English. The verb alfombrar means to carpet a floor. Do not confuse with moqueta, which in Spain refers specifically to fitted wall-to-wall carpet.
