Acoger implies a warm or official reception — it is used for welcoming refugees (acoger refugiados), hosting guests, or embracing an idea. The reflexive acogerse a means 'to avail oneself of' a right or benefit, as in acogerse a la jubilación anticipada ('to take early retirement').
