Ánimo covers emotional drive and morale: estado de ánimo is one's mood or emotional state, dar ánimo(s) means 'to encourage.' The exclamation ¡Ánimo! is the standard Spanish cheer ('Come on!' / 'Cheer up!'). The adjective animado (lively, animated) and the verb animar (to encourage, to liven up) share this root.
