vigente

current; in force

adjective bee-HEN-teh Less Common

Origin: From Latin vigens, present participle of vigere, 'to be in force'.

Usage Note

Vigente is a formal, legal-register word meaning 'currently valid or in effect' — used of laws, contracts, passports, and prices. It does not mean 'currently happening' in a general sense; use actual for that. A ley vigente is a law still on the books, as opposed to a repealed one.

Examples

"Ese reglamento sigue vigente desde 2010."

Natural Translation

That regulation has been in force since 2010.
