vagón

railway carriage; wagon

noun bah-GOHN Rare

Origin: From French 'wagon', which entered Spanish in the 19th century with railway expansion.

Usage Note

Vagón refers to an individual car of a train — whether passenger (vagón de pasajeros) or freight (vagón de mercancías). The written accent on the final syllable shows stress that defies the default penultimate-stress rule for words ending in -n. The plural vagones drops the accent because the stress is now regular (penultimate). Do not confuse it with furgón (a closed goods van) or carro (which in Latin America can also mean 'car').

Examples

"Nos sentamos en el último vagón del tren."

Natural Translation

We sat in the last carriage of the train.
