Unión covers a trade union (sindicato is more specific in labour contexts), a political union, and the abstract concept of unity. La Unión Europea (the European Union) is its most recognisable proper-noun use. Do not confuse with junta (board/joint) or reunión (meeting); unión emphasises the state of being joined rather than a gathering.
