torrente
torrent, rushing stream
noun toh-RREN-teh Rare
Origin: From Latin torrens (rushing, burning), from torrere (to burn, to parch).
Also means
flood, surge
Usage Note
Torrente is used both literally (a fast-flowing mountain stream or flash flood) and figuratively (a torrential outpouring) — un torrente de palabras (a torrent of words), un torrente de lágrimas (a flood of tears). The adjective torrencial (torrential) is very common in weather reports. Do not confuse with tormenta (storm) — torrente is specifically the flowing water, not the storm itself.
Examples
"El torrente bajaba con fuerza tras la lluvia."
Natural Translation
The torrent rushed down powerfully after the rain.
