Origin: Named after Antonio José de Sucre, a leader of Spanish American independence.
Usage Note
Sucre was the official currency of Ecuador from 1884 until 2000, when Ecuador adopted the US dollar. It is also the constitutional capital of Bolivia. The Spanish word for sugar, by contrast, is azúcar.
