Usage Note

Status is an invariable loanword from Latin — its plural is also status (no -es added), though some writers use estatus (the Hispanicized spelling the RAE now accepts). It most often appears in status social or status quo (the latter also used unchanged in Spanish). The Hispanicized estatus is increasingly common in formal writing.
