Origin: From Hebrew Sefarad, the biblical name applied to the Iberian Peninsula.

Usage Note

Sefardí (also spelled sefardita) refers to Jews of Iberian origin expelled from Spain in 1492 and their descendants. Their Judeo-Spanish language, el ladino or judeoespañol, preserves many archaic Spanish features. The plural is sefardíes or sefardís.
