rondar

to patrol

verb rron-DAHR Rare

Also means

to hover around

Usage Note

Rondar literally means to patrol or walk around an area (as police rondan the neighborhood), but metaphorically it means to hover around or approximately equal a figure: los precios rondan los cien euros ('prices are around a hundred euros'). It can also describe a nagging thought that circles in one's mind, and in older usage means to serenade under a window.

The police patrol the neighborhood every night.
