Usage Note

Renunciar takes a before what is being given up: renunció a su cargo (he resigned from his post), renunció a sus derechos (she waived her rights). It differs from dimitir, which is specifically to resign from a job or political office in Spain. In Latin America renunciar is the more common term for resigning from a position.
