psiquiatría

psychiatry

noun see-kyah-tree-AH Rare

Origin: From Greek psyche ('mind, soul') + iatros ('healer').

Usage Note

Psiquiatría is the medical speciality dealing with mental disorders; the practitioner is a psiquiatra (psychiatrist). Note that the initial ps- is frequently simplified to s- in speech across Latin America (siquiatría, siquiatra), though the ps- spelling is standard in writing. Do not confuse with psicología (psychology), a non-medical discipline.

Examples

"Estudia psiquiatría en la universidad pública."

Natural Translation

She studies psychiatry at the public university.
