Usage Note

Privar means to deprive someone of something (privar de libertad — to deprive of freedom). In Spain, the colloquial phrase le priva means 'he/she loves it' or 'it drives them wild' — a completely different, informal register. The reflexive privarse de means to abstain from something voluntarily.
