Origin: From Latin paternus, from pater (father).
Usage Note
Paterno means 'of or relating to the father's side' (abuelo paterno = paternal grandfather) or 'fatherly in manner'. Do not confuse with paternal, which also exists and carries a slightly warmer, more affectionate nuance. Materno is the direct counterpart.
