Pantera is the Spanish word for a panther — in zoology it is the genus Panthera that includes lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. In popular usage pantera negra (black panther) refers to a melanistic leopard or jaguar. The word is also the name of the famous pink cartoon character la Pantera Rosa.
