oposición
opposition
noun oh-poh-see-SYOHN Common
Origin: From Latin oppositio.
Usage Note
Oposición means political opposition (la oposición parlamentaria) but also has a uniquely Spanish institutional sense: a competitive public exam (las oposiciones) used to enter civil service jobs. Candidates who sit these exams are called opositores. The plural oposiciones almost always refers to these competitive exams rather than abstract opposition.
Examples
"La oposición criticó la nueva ley."
Natural Translation
The opposition criticised the new law.
