oficializar

to make official

verb oh-fee-syah-lee-SAHR Rare

Usage Note

Oficializar follows the regular -ar pattern and is used in formal and political contexts to describe the act of giving something official status — a language, a decision, or a candidacy. The reflexive oficializarse is used when a situation becomes official on its own (el acuerdo se oficializó ayer). It is more common in Latin America than in Spain, where hacer oficial is often preferred.

Examples

"El gobierno quiere oficializar el acuerdo esta semana."

Natural Translation

The government wants to make the agreement official this week.
