naipe

playing card

noun NAH-ee-peh Rare

Usage Note

Naipe is the standard word for an individual playing card, as opposed to the full deck (baraja). The Spanish deck (baraja española) has 40 or 48 cards divided into four suits: oros, copas, espadas, and bastos — different from the French suits used in English-speaking countries. Jugar a los naipes means to play cards.

Examples

"Sacó un naipe de la baraja."

Natural Translation

She drew a playing card from the deck.
