Usage Note

Multicultural is an invariable adjective — it does not change for gender (un barrio multicultural / una ciudad multicultural). It is a direct borrowing of the English/French concept and entered Spanish in the late twentieth century alongside debates about immigration and integration. In academic contexts it is often contrasted with interculturalmulticultural acknowledges the coexistence of cultures, while intercultural implies active exchange and dialogue between them.
