mismo

same; itself

adjective MEES-moh Common

Origin: From Vulgar Latin metipsimus.

Also means

very; right (emphatic)

Usage Note

Mismo intensifies and specifies: placed after a pronoun or noun it adds emphasis (yo mismo lo hice = 'I did it myself'). Before a noun it signals identity (el mismo día = 'the very same day'). The phrase da lo mismo ('it's all the same') is extremely common. It agrees in gender and number: misma, mismos, mismas.

Examples

"Él mismo preparó la cena."

Natural Translation

He himself prepared the dinner.
