Mezquita entered Spanish during the Moorish presence in the Iberian Peninsula (711–1492). The famous Mezquita de Córdoba is one of the world's finest examples of Moorish architecture. Note qu before i preserves the /k/ sound. The word has no gender ambiguity: always feminine.
