merluza

hake

noun mehr-LOO-sah Rare

Usage Note

Merluza is one of the most popular fish in Spanish cuisine — a mild white fish used in countless recipes from merluza a la romana (battered) to merluza en salsa verde (in green herb sauce). In colloquial Spain, coger/llevar una merluza means to get very drunk — a slang use unrelated to the fish.

Examples

"Pedí merluza a la plancha con limón."

Natural Translation

I ordered grilled hake with lemon.
