Usage Note
Mercadería is used in Latin America and in formal or commercial Spanish as a synonym of mercancía. In Spain, mercancía is far more common; mercadería sounds regional or old-fashioned in Peninsular Spanish. The plural mercaderías is standard in Argentine and Uruguayan commercial language. The related word mercadería should not be confused with mercado (market).
