Mantenido is the past participle of mantener used adjectivally. Its most colourful colloquial use in Spain and Latin America is to describe a person financially supported by a partner without contributing themselves — roughly 'kept man/woman': es un mantenido. In formal contexts it means sustained or maintained: un esfuerzo mantenido (a sustained effort).
