Usage Note

Liga primarily means a sports competition league (la Liga in Spain = La Liga, the top football division), but historically also meant an alliance or league of nations. In everyday Spanish, la Liga without article often refers specifically to the Spanish football league. The word is also used for a garter or rubber band in some regions of Latin America.
