lavanda

lavender

noun lah-BAHN-dah Rare

Origin: Medieval Latin lavanda, from lavare 'to wash'

Usage Note

Lavanda refers to both the lavender plant (Lavandula) and its characteristic pale purple colour. The word entered Spanish via the Latin lavanda because the herb was used in washing and bathing. Lavándula is the botanical genus name. In everyday speech, lavanda names both the plant and the colour, though lila or morado claro are also used for the shade.

Examples

"El campo de lavanda olía de maravilla."
