Jarabe came into Spanish from Arabic and refers to any sweet syrup, including medicinal syrups (jarabe para la tos — cough syrup). In Mexico, jarabe tapatío is the name of the famous folk dance, the Mexican Hat Dance. The word ends in -e but is masculine.
