Usage Note

Imputado is a legal term for a person formally charged or under investigation — it does NOT mean convicted. In Spain's legal system, imputado (now officially replaced by investigado since 2015) describes someone against whom a criminal proceeding has been opened. In Latin America imputado remains the standard term. It is distinct from condenado (convicted) or culpable (guilty).

Examples

"El imputado negó todos los cargos en la audiencia."
