iónico
ionic
adjective ee-OH-nee-koh Rare
Origin: From Greek ion, present participle of ienai (to go), via New Latin ionicus.
Usage Note
Iónico describes phenomena, bonds, or compounds involving ions. An enlace iónico (ionic bond) is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Note that iónico has a written accent on the first syllable because it is an esdrújula (stressed on the antepenultimate syllable), which always carries a tilde in Spanish.
Examples
"El cloruro de sodio tiene un enlace iónico."
Natural Translation
Sodium chloride has an ionic bond.
