Usage Note

Humedal is the standard ecological term for wetland habitats including marshes, swamps, and bogs. It is masculine: el humedal. Spain's most famous humedal is the Parque Nacional de Doñana. The word gained prominence through conservation legislation and environmental journalism from the 1980s onward.
