holandés

Dutch

adjective noun oh-lahn-DEHS Less Common

Origin: From 'Holanda' (Holland), via Spanish adaptation.

Usage Note

Holandés refers to the Dutch language, people, or things from the Netherlands. As a noun it takes the feminine holandesa. The accent on the final syllable is required to mark the irregular stress; without it the word would default to penultimate stress. Hablar en holandés means 'to speak in Dutch'.

Examples

"Mi vecino es holandés y habla cuatro idiomas."

Natural Translation

My neighbour is Dutch and speaks four languages.
