hambre

hunger

noun AHM-breh Less Common

Also means

famine

Usage Note

Hambre is grammatically feminine (el hambre uses el only because it begins with a stressed /a/; adjectives still agree feminine: mucha hambre, never mucho hambre). This masculine-article-on-feminine-noun pattern is a classic learner trap — compare el agua fría. Tener hambre means 'to be hungry'; pasar hambre means 'to go hungry'.

Examples

"Los niños tienen mucha hambre después de clase."

Natural Translation

The children are very hungry after school.
