Graduar is used both for graduating from a programme (se graduó en medicina) and for calibrating or adjusting something by degrees, such as volume or temperature. The reflexive graduarse specifically means to earn a degree or diploma. In Spain it is standard for university completion, though licenciarse is also heard.
