gordo
fat
adjective noun GOHR-doh Rare
Origin: From Latin gurdus (dull, heavy).
Also means
big
Usage Note
Gordo functions as both adjective ('fat, overweight') and noun (un gordo = 'a fat person'). In Spain it is used far more directly than in English — calling someone gordo/a as a nickname is common and not always offensive. El Gordo is the popular name for the jackpot in the Spanish Christmas lottery (la Lotería de Navidad). As an adjective it can also mean 'big' in a non-physical sense (un problema gordo = 'a big problem').
Examples
"El gato estaba muy gordo y perezoso."
Natural Translation
The cat was very fat and lazy.
