goleado

thrashed; heavily beaten (in a game)

adjective goh-leh-AH-doh Rare

Usage Note

Goleado is the past-participle-turned-adjective from the verb golear ('to score many goals against'), built on gol (goal, itself from English). It describes the losing team in a high-scoring defeat and is used almost exclusively in football (soccer) commentary. The masculine singular form is goleado, feminine goleada; the noun una goleada refers to the heavy defeat itself.

Examples

"El equipo goleado abandonó el campo cabizbajo."

Natural Translation

The thrashed team left the pitch with their heads down.
