Usage Note

Gobernación is a formal administrative term. In Mexico and several Latin American countries it names the Interior Ministry (Secretaría de Gobernación), roughly equivalent to Spain's Ministerio del Interior. In Spain it most often appears in Ministerio de la Gobernación (historic name) or in compound names of regional offices. The everyday word for 'government' is gobierno.
