frase

phrase, sentence

noun FRAH-seh Less Common

Origin: From Greek phrasis (expression), via Latin.

Usage Note

Frase can mean a grammatical sentence (interchangeable with oración in everyday speech) or a shorter phrase or set expression. Linguists distinguish frase (phrase, a sub-clausal unit) from oración (sentence, a full clause), but this distinction is not consistently observed outside academic grammar. Frase hecha is the standard term for an idiom or set phrase.

Examples

"Repite la frase en voz alta."

Natural Translation

Repeat the phrase out loud.
