formalmente

formally

adverb fohr-mahl-MEN-teh Less Common

Usage Note

Formalmente means 'in a formal or official manner' (formalmente acusado, formally charged; formalmente inaugurado, formally inaugurated). It is distinct from de forma oficial only in register — both mean much the same thing, but formalmente is more concise and common in written Spanish. Avoid confusing it with con formalidad (with decorum/politeness).

Examples

"El acuerdo fue formalmente firmado ayer."

Natural Translation

The agreement was formally signed yesterday.
