fletar

to charter (a vessel or aircraft)

verb fleh-TAHR Rare

Origin: From French fréter, 'to freight'.

Also means

to hire out, to rent

Usage Note

Fletar primarily means to charter a ship, plane, or bus for exclusive use — fletar un avión ('to charter a plane'). In parts of Latin America (especially the River Plate region) it can also mean simply 'to hire' a vehicle, closer to alquilar. The noun flete ('freight, charter fee') comes from the same root.

Examples

"Van a fletar un barco para la travesía."

Natural Translation

They are going to charter a boat for the crossing.
