fisión
fission
noun fee-SYOHN Rare
Origin: Latin 'fissio' (a splitting), from 'findere' (to split).
Usage Note
Fisión is used primarily in scientific contexts for the splitting of an atomic nucleus (fisión nuclear) releasing energy, as in nuclear power plants. The opposite process is fusión (fusion). The plural fisiones follows a regular pattern, but note the accent shifts with the stress: fisión → fisiones (accent dropped because the stress is now naturally penultimate).
Examples
"La fisión nuclear libera grandes cantidades de energía."
Natural Translation
Nuclear fission releases large amounts of energy.
