Extraordinario can be a compliment ('outstanding') or a neutral bureaucratic term for something outside the ordinary — an hora extraordinaria is overtime, a reunión extraordinaria is an emergency meeting. It follows the noun in formal registers (un caso extraordinario) but can precede for emphasis. The shortened colloquial form extra is widely used.
