Estanque denotes a man-made body of standing water: an ornamental pond, a fish tank in a park, or an irrigation reservoir. It differs from lago (natural lake) and piscina (swimming pool). In Spain estanque is the word used for the iconic boating ponds in city parks like the Retiro in Madrid.
