to ski

verb ehs-kee-AHR Rare

Origin: From esquí (ski), from Norwegian ski.

Usage Note

Esquiar is conjugated as a regular -ar verb but the stress shifts in the present tense to keep the i strong: yo esquío, tú esquías (not éskio). It is used for downhill and cross-country skiing alike. The related nouns are esquí (ski, skiing) and esquiador/esquiadora (skier). Hacer esquí is an alternative construction heard in some regions.
