Usage Note
Ese is the masculine singular mid-distance demonstrative, pointing to something near the person addressed rather than the speaker. The three-tier system — este (here), ese (there by you), aquel (over there) — is more consistently maintained in Latin America than in Spain, where ese often replaces aquel in casual speech. Feminine is esa, plurals esos/esas.
Examples
"Ese coche es de mi vecino."
Natural Translation
That car belongs to my neighbour.
