Usage Note

Escrutinio has two related but distinct uses: close examination or scrutiny (bajo escrutinio público, under public scrutiny) and the official counting of votes in an election (el escrutinio de los votos). The verb is escrutar or escudriñar (to scrutinise). In Spanish political reporting both senses are common on election nights.
