engordar

to fatten

verb en-gohr-DAHR Rare

Also means

to put on weight

Usage Note

Engordar is used both transitively ('to fatten an animal') and intransitively ('to gain weight'). The intransitive use without a reflexive pronoun is standard (he engordado dos kilos, 'I've put on two kilos'). Note that adelgazar is its antonym ('to lose weight'). Informally, foods are described as engordar when they are fattening.

Examples

"No quiero engordar durante las fiestas."

Natural Translation

I don't want to put on weight during the holidays.
