electo
elected
adjective eh-LEHK-toh Rare
Origin: From Latin electus, past participle of eligere (to choose).
Also means
president-elect (attributive)
Usage Note
Electo is a formal adjective used only after a noun to mean 'chosen but not yet inaugurated': presidente electo, gobernador electo. It is not used predicatively (el presidente es electo is wrong; use elegido instead). The distinction between electo (chosen, awaiting inauguration) and elegido (chosen, general sense) is important in political reporting.
Examples
"El presidente electo dará su primer discurso mañana."
Natural Translation
The president-elect will give his first speech tomorrow.
