dote

dowry

noun DOH-teh Rare

Origin: from Latin dos, dotis, 'gift, dowry'

Usage Note

Dote has two senses: the historical dowry (property a bride brought to a marriage) and, more commonly today, a natural talent or gift, where it is almost always plural: sus dotes de liderazgo (his leadership gifts). The word is feminine, as the plural adjective shows: grandes dotes.

Examples
